Super-hard grinding tools
The source material for CBN is hexagonal boron nitride, a synthetic product that does not occur in nature. Cubic boron nitride is produced through the application of very high pressure and at temperatures up to 4890°F (2700°C).
These days, diamond tools use almost exclusively synthetically manufactured diamond grains. The source material for this is pure carbon graphite that is converted into diamond through a combination of high pressure and temperature (approx. 3632°F (2000°C)).
CBN and diamond grinding wheels consist of a ceramic, aluminum, or steel base body that is permanently bonded with the abrasive coating. You will find further details on the dimensions in the section on the grinding wheel composition.
Diamond grinding wheels, which can be considerably more expensive than conventional grinding wheels, can deliver significant productivity increases in the grinding process if some key application parameters are observed.
